What does it mean to accept or not accept assignment?
In Medicare terms, accepting assignment states that we, the provider, agrees to accept Medicare allowable. Medicare pays 80% of their allowable amount and the patient is responsible for 20% of their allowable. The amount above the allowable is written off by the provider.
|
| Example: $100.00 Full charge 80.00 Medicare allowable amount 20.00 Difference between full charge and the allowable amount, which is adjusted off by the provider. 64.00 80% of the approved amount paid by Medicare 16.00 Patient responsibility Non-assigned indicates the patient is responsible for the amount billed and we, the provider, will bill Medicare. In this instance, Medicare will pay or deny services directly to the patient. |
